The office of the President has rejected the proposed N750,000 per player bonus presented by the Federal Ministry of Sports for the victorious Golden Eaglets that won the FIFA U_17 World Cup, stating that the amount is “too much”.
It is reported that current financial situation in the country is one of the reason why the Buhari led administration rejected the proposed amount. As it will be seen as reckless if the government splashes that kind of money on the youngsters.
“The proposal has been reviewed after the first rejection. We wait for the green light from the presidency on the date for the reception and the reward,” a sports ministry official disclosed.
A new N150,000 per player proposal has been put forward by the ministry and while I understand the current economic situation. I think the boys deserve a little bit more than 150,000 given the fact they made the country proud on the international stage. Because “criminals” who are given amnesty get a lot better than this.
