A 78 year old man identified by police as Hassan Chiroma slits his own throat at the city abbatoir in Kano State yesterday.
The incident which sent a huge wave of panic among city dwellers has sent toungues wagging over what could have led the septuagenarian to commit suicide.
Eyewitness said the man was sighted earlier at a black smiths section of the market around midday where he allegedly purchased a knife which he used to commit suicide.
The witness stated that the desperate cry of a man in danger triggered pandemonium among traders in the market who didn't have the courage to witness the horror.
But the police authorities suspected foul play over the development and has taken into custody four persons suspected to have been connected with the tragic incident.
The police spokesperson in Kano ASP Magaji Musa Majia told vanguard that they rushed to the scene and met the septuagenarian in a pool of his own blood where he was rushed to a nearby facility before he gave up the ghost.
The police spokesperson said the command had requested the hospital to carry out an autopsy to ascertain factors that led to his death adding that the corpse would be released for burial after investigations has been completed.
The police said they are working on two leads and the likely outcome of their investigation to reveal whether it is suicide or otherwise.
The police however promised to keep Nigerians abreast of the situation as it unfolds.
