ICPC Boss Attributes Corruption To Poor Parental Upbringing

As part of its efforts to actualize a Nigeria free from all forms of corruption and corrupt practices, the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) yesterday stressed the need to groom children to shun immorality and corruption.

The chairman of ICPC, Barrister Ekpo Nta, disclosed this yesterday at the opening ceremony of the ACAN-UBEC regional workshop on entrenching transparency and integrity in the finanfial and procurement processes of SUBEB and FCT-UBEB held in Enugu.

Mr Nta, who was represented by the ICPC zonal commissioner for Enugu, Prince Hassan Mohamed, stated that the importance of UBEC, SUBEBs and FCT-UBEB cannot be over-looked in our educational sector.

“As institutions that have the mandate to mold children’s life to formal education, it therefore become imperative that their lives have to be groomed in such a way that corruption and immoral life-style should not be acceptable by them” he stated.

According the ICPC chairman, the programme was not only designed to inform them on the dangers of corruption but to also ensure that the “message is carried down to the grass root level”.

He advised them not to see the workshop as a mere workshop , adding that it was expected that they should train others in their office and ensure that transparency, accountability, honesty and integrity would be the order in their private and public lives.
Mr Nta further stated that the role of ICPC was no longer news, saying what was news was that the ICPC has ‘Prevention’ of corruption as one of it’s core mandate, adding that “ this it has done with enormous success

Earlier in his remarks, the provost, Anti-Corruption Academy of Nigeria, Professor Sola Akinride, had stated that the basic education system was the gateway to the education system in the country, adding that the need to get the system right with regard to the management of internal processes has made the workshop a necessity.

He appreciated the UBEC Executive Secretary, Dr Dikko Suleiman and his management team for the collaboration and the cooperation they received during the planning as well as the ICPC Chairman and the honourable members for the constant support and encouragement they have been giving to the Anti-Corruption Academy.
