The Portuguese has been consistently linked with a move away from Spain, with United and Paris saint Germain as possible destinations.
It is understood that ideally Christian Ronaldo will prefer an Old Trafford return and Van Gaal has said he will be welcomed back.
He told reporters " Ronaldo plays on the wings, he is fast and scores goals and there is no trainer in the world that doesn't like him".
He further said they are looking at all players and not just Ronaldo but the players are almost ungettable.
